I want this to happen really bad okay..
My headcanon is that Tarrlok tells everybody that Korra is dead, killed by Amon and the equalists. Everyone will be devastated and sad, but Mako was torn apart. There were still so many things he wanted to say to her, he was angry at himself because he never took the chance to tell her how much he cared about her, and most of all, he couldn’t forgive himself for not being able to protect her.
Later on they found out that Korra was still alive and Tarrlok hid her somewhere. Hearing this, Mako was furious and goes to confront Tarrlok to beat the crap outta him. He finally found Korra and was relieved she was still alive and breathing. Which leads to him confessing his feelings to her.
